Questions About Steptember

What are the start and end dates for Steptember?

Steptember starts on Monday, September 4, 2017 and ends at midnight on Sunday, October 1, 2017

When does registration open?

Registration is now open. Sign up today and start fundraising.

When will I receive my Steptember Kit and what does it include?

Steptember kits will be sent starting in August to the mailing address each member provides during registration; each team member will receive their own pack. Each kit contains a pedometer and a step-by-step guide about the campaign.

Using the website

I’ve misplaced my login details to the Steptember website. How do I login?

Click on ‘Forgot Password’ on the login page. You’ll be prompted to fill out your registered email address. An email will then to be sent to you with a link to a page on the website where you can set a new password.

I've registered but I am having trouble logging in?

Did you use your Facebook account to register? If you did, you will need to click on the 'Login with Facebook' button. If you are certain you used a particular username and password during registration but can't remember what password you chose, click on ‘Forgot Password’ on the login page. You’ll be prompted to fill out your registered email address. An email will then to be sent to you with a link to a page on the website where you can set a new password.

Don't forget - if you used Facebook to register, resetting your password won't solve your problems. Please make sure your computer isn't logged into someone else's Facebook account when trying to login to Steptember!

How do I form a team?

To start, get four people together and choose a team leader who will register the team via the website. During the registration process the Team Leader will be required to enter the names and email addresses of each Team Member. Each Team Member will then receive an invitation from the Steptember website to join the team and complete their personal registration.

What is a Team Leader?

A Team Leader is the person who is in charge of registering your team. They will register your team on the website and can manage the administration for the team.

How do I join a team?

Your team leader will enter your details during the registration process, so wait for your invite to land in your inbox.  You will then need to click on the link provided and complete your registration.  If you don't receive your invite, check your spam filter and add us as a contact.

Can more than one person be a Team Leader?

No. Each team has one (1) Team Leader and three (3) Team Members. If your Team Leader decides to leave your team, they can update their email address and contact details to transfer leadership to another person. This person cannot already be a member of an existing team. Any funds raised or steps that belonged to the original Team Leader will be transferred to the new Team Leader.

Can people in different states and locations across the country take part in Steptember?

Yes! Participants can be located anywhere in the United States; they just need to have access to the internet so that they can enter in their daily steps/activity. We encourage national organizations to use this as an opportunity for offices located in different states to participate in a common activity. It’s also a great way for family members and friends who live apart from each other to participate in an activity together. If you are interested in international participation, email steptember@cparf.org.

What happens if I hurt/injure myself or become ill and I am unable to complete the event?

The Team Leader can remove you from the team and invite a new member from the ‘My Team’ page. Otherwise, you can continue to stay on the team and focus on fundraising!

My organization has pre-purchased teams and one of my team members is a child, do we get a discount?

Unfortunately no, all pre-purchased teams are at the fixed cost of $100 for four people, regardless of age.

What is the benefit of registering my organization/school?

Registered organizations / schools are given the opportunity to customize a landing page that their teams will be linked to. From this landing page, your teams can see how they're progressing in relation to others within the organization/school and a group fundraising target can also be set. Organizations will also have an admin login, giving them the ability to monitor teams and pull reports.

Do I have to pre-purchase teams if I want to register an organization/school?

Yes.

How do I set up my organization/school?

First, decide who will be your organization/school's Steptember Leader. This person will be the main contact for Steptember and will be responsible for registering your organization / school and pre-purchasing your teams. They can register by clicking on the register button on the website and following the prompts.

The organization/school I belong to has already paid for my team. How do I get started?

Your organization's Steptember Leader (the person who registered your organization/school) would have received a registration code when they pre-purchased teams. Your Team Leader will need to contact this person to acquire the code and then enter it when registering your team. By entering this code, your team will be linked to your organization/school and your Team Leader will not be asked for payment during the registration process.

Reasons to Step Up to the Challenge

• Participation is great motivation to exercise more. You’ll get off the bus one stop early. You’ll take the stairs instead of the elevator. You’ll dance in the supermarket (well, maybe).

• You'll have more energy. You’ll sleep better. You may even lose a few pounds – that of course is all win-win!

• You’ll set up some friendly competition in the office and challenge coworkers (or as we call them: ‘arch enemies’) you know you can beat!

• Best of all, you’ll feel great knowing that the money you raise is going to a fantastic cause. You'll be supporting the world's best cerebral palsy research, as we get set to take quantum leaps in our understanding of this complex condition and move closer to finding the prevention and cure we think is possible.

Fundraising

How do I start fundraising?

Set a team goal. This is an opportunity to change the lives of children and adults living with cerebral palsy. Shoot for the moon and aim high. You will be surprised how easy it is once you get started.

Who can sponsor me?

Friends, family members, employers, work colleagues, you name it. Anyone with a big heart! The biggest fundraising mistake people make is not asking. Making a difference makes you feel great, so why not give the people around you the same opportunity to help.  Start with your circle of influence.

How can I fundraise?

How you raise funds is completely up to you, so get creative! Once you’ve set your team fundraising target get the team together and brainstorm. You automatically get your very own fundraising page where anyone can make a tax-deductible donation. Have some fun and inject your personality and style into it! Your sponsors will not only be supporting ground-breaking research, they’ll be supporting you as well.

Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling:

  • Garage sale
  • Trivia night
  • Car washes
  • Bake sales
  • Party with a purpose
  • Casual day or hat/cap day

Do I have to fundraise as a team or can I do my own activities?

That’s up to you. All funds raised by you and your team members will be combined to reach your team target.

How do I set a new fundraising target?

Your Team Leader can change the team fundraising target on the My Team page.

Our team has reached our fundraising target, what happens now?

Awesome! You obviously have a talent for it, so keep going! Your Team Leader can increase your team’s target at any time on the My Team page.

If my sponsor makes a donation to my team through the website, will they receive a tax receipt?

Yes. A tax receipt will be sent to their email address immediately after making the donation.

What is an offline donation?

Offline donations are any funds not raised via the website. If you receive cash or a check from a donor it is considered an offline donation.

How do I add my offline donations to my online total?

Use the banking and receipting area on your Materials page to enter offline funds. Once funds are received by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, your fundraising total will be automatically updated. You can find the Materials section by logging into your dashboard and clicking on the Menu button on the top left of the screen.

How does my sponsor receive a receipt for offline donations?

When you enter the offline donation, you’ll be prompted to enter the donor’s details. Once the funds are received by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, your donor will be sent a receipt via email. On the Materials page, you’ll find a receipt template to record your donor’s details and donation amount. This is useful for recalling the details when entering them into the site.

What is a tax deductible donation?

Any donation that was not given in exchange for goods or services.

Examples of payments that are not tax-deductible include:

  • purchases of items for fundraising events (baking supplies, car wash materials, etc.)

Do I have to wait for Steptember to start before I start fundraising?

No, you can start fundraising as soon as you register. The sooner the better!

Is the Steptember website secure?

Yes. The Steptember website uses SSL technology to encrypt your personal data when it is transferred from your browser to the website. Your personal details are protected on our servers, which are PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant. We never store any credit card details on our servers.

Participating in Steptember

What else can our organization do to make Steptember even better for our staff?

We encourage organizations to really get involved! There are many things you can do at an organizational level to engage and support your employees. Why not try:

  • Holding Steptember launch parties at the start and end of Steptember
  • Have competitions/incentives for teams
  • Start a lunchtime walking program
  • Use your newsletters to give updates on the progress of your teams

When do I wear my pedometer?

All the time! Only take your pedometer off when you're going to bed or in any type of water (as your pedometer isn't waterproof). For activities such as cycling or yoga which will generate a false reading on your pedometer we advise that you remove the pedometer and instead record the activity and duration on the website calculator for an accurate step count.

I do other physical activity apart from walking, for example, cycling. Can this count towards my step total?

Yes! Steptember isn’t just about walking. We encourage you to get out and do any activity you enjoy. We’ve created an activity conversion table to convert over 40 activities into steps. Simply select this activity when you record your steps on your webpage.

I can’t see my activity on the conversion table — does that mean it doesn’t count?

Not necessarily. We’ve done our best to convert as many activities as we can but it's impossible to include everything - ‘Curling’ for example, or ‘Finnish Wife Carrying’! If your activity isn’t represented try to select an activity that is similar to it. Please feel free to email one of our friendly Steptember team members and we’ll try and have your activity added to next year’s list.

Can I buy an extra pedometer if I lose or break both of mine?

If you need an extra pedometer please contact the Steptember Team a steptember@cparf.org

Will I ever need to replace the battery in my pedometer?

You shouldn’t need to replace the battery during Steptember. They are built to last the duration of the event. At some point in the future however the battery will run out. Simply follow the instructions supplied with your pedometer to change it.

Do I have to enter my steps every day?

We recommend that you enter steps every day to allow a steady journey up your virtual mountain.

Can anyone else see my step entries?

Yes, your team members will be able to see your steps. The general public will only see the team total steps.

Can I enter my steps via the Steptember website only, or is there another way?

You can also enter your steps via a smart phone.
