Ever met Luca?
Not the sea monster from Portorosso.
Our Luca. He’s way cooler. And less scaly.
Born at 3.5 pounds and ten weeks early, he started life like most heroes do: tiny, dramatic, and hooked up to more machines than a Marvel origin story.
He crushed his first week. Then an unexpected infection tried to crush him back.
Sepsis. Bacterial Meningitis. Hydrocephalus. (If you don’t know what those are, trust me — you don’t want them on your baby’s résumé.)
Still six weeks premature, he had brain surgery to implant a shunt that helped save his life (again). At one year old, cerebral palsy joined the plot twist. Basically, his brain and legs don’t always talk to each other.
But Luca? He just keeps moving forward — through therapies, orthotic fittings (his “rockets”), and more. All with his walker, which he drives like Lightning McQueen. This kid trains like an elite athlete.
Here’s the kicker: what happened to Luca can happen to any family.
Disability doesn’t discriminate.
1 in 4 adults in the U.S. live with at least one.
18 million people worldwide live with cerebral palsy.
And CP is one of the most underfunded areas of medical research.
So this STEPtember, we’re excited that PwC is standing alongside organizations worldwide. Thousands of people commit to 10,000 steps a day — or really, any kind of movement. Walk. Roll. Dance. Push a stroller. Do the worm. (Please stretch first.)
